Emergency Order from Alaska Department of Fish and Game

Positive News for Youth Fishers: Special Opportunities on the Ninilchik River

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) has issued an emergency order providing special opportunities for youth anglers on the Ninilchik River. This order, effective from June 3, 2024, through July 31, 2024, opens up a unique and exciting fishing experience designed especially for young fishers.

Key Highlights for Youth Anglers:

  1. Youth-Only Fishery Expansion: The area open for the youth-only fishery on the Ninilchik River has been extended. Now, young anglers can fish from the mouth of the river to the 2-mile markers located near the Garrison Ridge Road bridge.
  2. Focus on Education and Fun: This youth fishery aims to provide a fun and educational environment where young anglers can learn about fishing techniques, local ecology, and the importance of sustainable fishing practices.
  3. Opportunities for Hatchery King Salmon: The retention of wild king salmon is prohibited, but young anglers have the exciting opportunity to catch and keep hatchery king salmon. The bag limit for hatchery king salmon is increased to 2 per day, providing plenty of action and a rewarding experience for young fishers.
  4. Family-Friendly Environment: The youth-only fishery offers a family-friendly atmosphere where parents and guardians can support and encourage their young anglers. It’s a great way to bond over a shared love for the outdoors and create lasting memories together.

Positive Outlook for the 2024 Fishing Season

Despite the necessary restrictions, there are still plenty of fantastic fishing opportunities available. The increased bag limits for hatchery king salmon and the strong sockeye salmon runs ensure that anglers of all ages can enjoy a productive and rewarding fishing experience.

At Kenai Fly Fish (KFF), we are dedicated to providing exceptional fishing adventures while adhering to all regulations to ensure sustainable fishing practices. Our knowledgeable guides are excited to support young anglers and help them develop their fishing skills in a positive and enjoyable environment.
