The Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) has implemented a new restriction for the 2025 fishing season on the Kasilof River. From May 1 through August 15, anglers may not use bait and must use only single-hook artificial lures. This restriction is aimed at protecting king salmon populations while maintaining a high-quality fishing experience for all anglers.
⛔ What This Restriction Means for Anglers
- Bait of any kind is prohibited.
- Only single-hook artificial lures are allowed.
- Applies to all species in the Kasilof River during this period.
- This measure is intended to reduce incidental king salmon mortality.

📉 Why Is This Restriction in Place?
King salmon populations in Cook Inlet and the Kasilof River are continuing to struggle, and this restriction helps increase survival rates for released fish. By removing bait from the equation and limiting gear to single-hook artificial lures, the goal is to:
✔ Reduce deep-hooking injuries in king salmon.
✔ Increase the chances of released fish surviving.
✔ Allow for a sustainable king salmon population in future seasons.
These efforts are critical to ensure the longevity of Alaska’s wild king salmon stocks and to provide sustainable fishing opportunities for future generations.
🎣 How Will This Affect Your Kasilof River Fishing Experience?
While using bait can often lead to more bites, this restriction does not mean the fishing experience will be any less rewarding. In fact, many experienced anglers find that single-hook artificial lures can be just as effective, especially when used correctly.
✅ What You Can Still Use:
- Spinners
- Spoons
- Plugs
- Flies

🎣 Alternative Fishing Options for 2025
Even with these new gear restrictions, there are still fantastic fishing opportunities in the Kenai Peninsula region:
✅ Kasilof River King & Sockeye Salmon Fishing
- While bait is prohibited, plenty of king and sockeye salmon will still be caught using artificial lures.
- Drift boat fishing remains one of the best ways to target salmon in the Kasilof River.
✅ Saltwater Fishing in Homer & Seward
- For anglers wanting to use bait, consider booking a halibut or rockfish charter in Homer or Seward.
- King salmon may still be available in offshore waters under separate regulations.
