July 2025 Salmon Fishing in Alaska – Peak Season on the Kenai River

Posted · Add Comment

This is it.

July is the most action-packed month on the Kenai River.
The sockeye are surging upstream. The trout are locked in behind the run. And by late July, the first coho (silver salmon) are showing up to kick off the second wave.

At Kenai Fly Fish, July is our busiest month — for a reason. If you’re looking to hit the river when the fish are thick and the action is nonstop, this is the time to go.

🟥 Why July is Peak Sockeye Season on the Kenai River

✅ Second Run Sockeye – The Big Show

  • 📅 Peak Timing: July 10–25

  • 🐟 Fast-paced fishing with potential for daily limits

  • 🧊 Bright, hard-fighting fish fresh from the salt

  • 🔥 Over 4.1 million sockeye expected in the Kenai this summer

If you want to fill your cooler, this is your month.

🟦 Late July = First Shot at Silver Salmon (Coho)

While sockeye dominate early July, coho salmon begin arriving the last week of the month — offering a bonus target for anglers booking later in the month.

  • 🎯 Start casting jigs and spinners in late July

  • 🎣 Fish silvers and sockeye on the same day for a combo experience

  • 💥 Coho hit hard, jump high, and never go quietly

🌈 Bonus: Rainbow Trout & Dolly Varden Binge on Sockeye Eggs

Behind every sockeye run is a feeding frenzy.
Rainbow trout and Dolly Varden stage behind spawning lanes, creating world-class trout fishing on light tackle.

✅ Add a half-day trout float to your salmon trip for the full experience.
