Sockeye Salmon fishing on the Kenai River

August on the Kenai River is electric. The coho (silver) salmon season kicks off, sockeye wind down, and rainbow trout feeding hits full throttle. With thinning crowds, cooler mornings, and fish on the move, this is one of the most dynamic, diverse months to fish the Kenai.

⚡ Silver Salmon – The Coho Rush Begins

📅 Season: August 1 – October 30
📈 Prime Start: August 15

August marks the official kickoff for Kenai River coho salmon. These fish hit hard, leap high, and love to smash anything in their path—perfect for spinners, twitching jigs, and fly patterns.

📍 Where We Fish:

  • Middle Kenai (mid-to-late August)

  • Lower Kenai (early starters and tidal fish)

🎣 Techniques:

  • Casting spinners or twitching jigs

  • Backtrolling plugs along travel lanes

  • Fly fishing with weighted streamers and sink-tips

Great for families, fly anglers, and action junkies chasing big fish with delicious fillets.

🔴 Sockeye Salmon – The Final Push

📅 Season Ends: August 15
📉 Tapering Fast by Mid-August

The second sockeye run starts to slow in early August, but opportunities still exist for harvest-minded anglers. Fish the right tides and seams, and you’ll find fresh sockeye pushing upriver until mid-month.

📍 Where We Fish:

  • Lower Kenai access points

  • Deeper seams and gravel staging areas

🎣 Techniques:

  • Traditional “flossing” methods with leaders and yarn

  • Sight-casting moving fish in clear water

Ideal for finishing your freezer haul before the sockeye color up.

🟢 Rainbow Trout – Feast Mode Fully Engaged

📅 Season: June 11 – November 30
📈 August = Peak Feeding Window

August is prime time for Kenai River trout. With millions of sockeye spawning and dying off, the river becomes a buffet of eggs and flesh. The result? Trophy rainbows up to 30 inches crushing flies in every seam.

📍 Where We Fish:

  • Middle Kenai (Skilak drift to Sterling)

  • Upper Kenai floats for big numbers and scenic beauty

🎣 Techniques:

  • Beads and flesh flies

  • Swinging leeches and streamers

  • Indicator rigs and light spin setups

Perfect for catch-and-release enthusiasts, fly anglers, and trophy chasers.
