Sockeye Salmon

Attention anglers! There’s fantastic news from the Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) that’s sure to make your fishing trips even more rewarding this season. As of June 26, 2024, the ADF&G has increased the daily bag and possession limits for sockeye salmon on the Kasilof River. This change is set to provide more opportunities for you to catch these prized fish during the 2024 fishing season.

New Bag and Possession Limits for Sockeye Salmon

Effective from 12:01 a.m. Wednesday, June 26 through 11:59 p.m. Tuesday, December 31, 2024:

  • Sockeye Salmon: Anglers can now keep six sockeye salmon per day, with a possession limit of twelve fish.
  • Coho Salmon: The limit remains at no more than two coho salmon per day and two in possession.

These limits are applicable to all areas of the Kasilof River open to salmon fishing, allowing for an exceptional fishing experience.

Robust Sockeye Salmon Run Expected

The biological escapement goal for the Kasilof River ranges from 140,000 to 320,000 sockeye salmon. By June 24, 2024, an impressive 99,348 sockeye salmon had already been recorded passing through the Kasilof River sonar site. This strong run suggests that the escapement goals will be comfortably exceeded, promising a bountiful season for anglers.

Phill Stacey, Area Management Biologist, commented on the update:

“Increasing the bag and possession limits for sockeye salmon allows anglers an opportunity to harvest additional sockeye salmon on what is shaping up to be a strong run.”
