August on the Kenai Peninsula is the coho salmon month. The sockeye run wraps up, the crowds thin out slightly, and a new species — aggressive, acrobatic coho salmon — pushes into the river system. For anglers who want action, August delivers it differently than June and July, but it delivers.
Coho Salmon — August Is Their Month
Coho salmon are the hardest‑fighting fish Ian targets all season. They hit lures aggressively, jump multiple times, and fight all the way to the net. August coho runs on the Kenai and Kasilof Rivers can be exceptional. Ian runs both drift boat and bank sessions targeting fresh silvers from the first week of August through the end of the month.
For new anglers, coho are also more forgiving — they respond to a wider range of presentations and are generally more willing to bite than sockeye or kings. August is a great month for first‑timers.
Sockeye Late‑Season Wrap
Early August still sees sockeye action on the Kenai and Kasilof. The counts slow from July's peak, but determined anglers can still find strong fishing, especially in the first two weeks. Ian recommends combining a sockeye and coho target on the same August float — two species, one day, maximum value.
Rainbow Trout — Fall Pre‑Season
August rainbows are some of the fattest fish of the year. They have been gorging on salmon eggs, flesh, and insects all summer. Ian's guided trout floats in August are a premium experience — technical, uncrowded, and often producing trophy‑class fish. If you have never fished a dedicated Alaska trout trip, August is the perfect month to try.
Dolly Varden on the Move
As salmon begin to spawn in upper tributaries, Dolly Varden follow the egg drifts with enthusiasm. August Dolly Varden fishing can be spectacular for fly anglers who know the right stretches. Ian incorporates Dolly fishing into many of his August float trips as a bonus species.
