July 11 Kenai River Fishing Report — Peak Sockeye Run & Early Coho Signs

Ian McDonald July 11, 2026

July is the peak of the Alaska salmon season. The Kenai Peninsula runs at full capacity — parking fills before dawn, guides run double shifts, and the rivers are moving fish in massive numbers. Ian has been on the water every day and the reports are strong.

Sockeye Run Is On

The main‑run Kenai River sockeye is in full swing in July. The 2026 forecast of 4.45 million fish is holding up — counts are strong and anglers who are prepared are putting limits in the cooler. Russian River, Upper Kenai, and the Kenai mainstem are all producing.

Ian's top tip for July: get on the water early. The first two hours of legal fishing light are typically the most productive. The sockeye push hardest when pressure is lowest.

Rainbow Trout and Dolly Varden

Between the sockeye mayhem, Ian builds trout sessions into the schedule for clients who want technical fly fishing. July rainbows are large, aggressive, and often overlooked because everyone is chasing salmon. If you want the best trout day of your life, ask Ian about a dedicated trout float.

King Salmon Update

Kenai River king salmon remain under restriction for 2026. Check current emergency orders before any trip — regulations can shift. Ian monitors the Alaska Department of Fish and Game daily and always fishes in full compliance.

Kasilof River Late‑July Action

As the Kenai mainstem gets heavier pressure in mid‑July, Ian often rotates clients to the Kasilof River for an afternoon sockeye session. The Kasilof dipnetting area has been expanded for 2026, giving personal‑use anglers more opportunity. Guide trips on the Kasilof in July remain some of the best value fishing on the peninsula.
