July is the month Alaska fishing was made for. Daylight stretches past 11 pm, the rivers run green and cold, and sockeye salmon stack at every productive seam and hole. Ian is on the water daily — and the reports are exactly what anglers want to hear.
Peak Sockeye Run — What to Expect
The Russian River sockeye run is at its peak. Upper Kenai and mainstem sockeye counts are strong. Ian's guided trips during this window are producing limits for most clients willing to put in the time and follow the game plan. Bring a big cooler.
Coho Are Coming
In late July, Ian starts watching for the first coho salmon — also called silver salmon. Coho are one of the hardest‑fighting salmon species in Alaska. They tend to show up in river mouths first, then push upriver through August. Booking a late‑July or early‑August date right now means you'll be positioned to target early silvers.
The Trout Window
July is when Ian sees some of the largest rainbow trout of the season. These fish are well‑fed on salmon eggs and insects. A fly rod in the right hands in the right section of the Upper Kenai in July is as good as Alaska trout fishing gets. Ian builds dedicated trout floats for clients who are serious about quality over quantity.
