Launching Points

Homer Spit

~90 min from Soldotna

The halibut capital of the world. Homer Spit has dozens of charter operations. Halibut are caught from 100–400 feet of water on the near-shore and offshore grounds of Kachemak Bay and beyond. The largest halibut in Alaska are consistently caught from Homer grounds.

Anchor Point

~75 min from Soldotna

Anchor Point offers beach launches and near-shore halibut fishing in Cook Inlet. Smaller operation, more personal experience. Best for anglers looking for a less crowded alternative to Homer with easy access to productive near-shore halibut grounds.

Ninilchik Harbor

~60 min from Soldotna

Small boat harbor with access to near-shore Cook Inlet halibut grounds. Often overlooked compared to Homer, but productive for "chicken halibut" in the 20–50 lb range — perfect eating size. Several charter operations run out of Ninilchik.

Halibut Fishing Techniques

Bottom Bouncing (Most Common)

Heavy jig heads (8–32 oz) tipped with herring, salmon belly, or squid, dropped to the bottom and worked with a slow lift-drop cadence. The most productive method for numbers of fish.

Circle Hooks & Bait

A heavy weight rig with a sliding sinker and circle hook baited with whole or cut herring. The circle hook auto-sets as the halibut turns away — ideal for newer anglers who need a forgiving hookset.

Jigging (Most Exciting)

Iron jigs worked at speed through the water column can produce explosive strikes. Often more effective for larger fish that are actively feeding. Requires more physical effort but produces unforgettable takes.

Timing the Tide

Halibut are most active during tidal movement — particularly the 2 hours before and after the tidal change. Slack water periods (high and low tide) often see dramatically reduced action. Check our tide station pages.
