Kenai River Fly & Bead Selection Guide

Technical fly selection and egg bead matching guide for the Kenai River. Master the exact bead diameters, color hues, flesh streamers, and leader setups required to land world-class rainbow trout and silver salmon.

💡

ADF&G Legal Pegging Rule: 2 Inches Above Hook Eye

When fishing unweighted plastic beads for rainbow trout or dolly varden, ADF&G gear rules specify that the bead must be pegged no more than 2 inches from the hook eye. Free-sliding beads or beads pegged farther than 2 inches are illegal.

Category 01

Trophy Rainbow Trout: Egg Bead Selection

August 15 – October 31 (Peak Spawn)

During the sockeye and pink salmon spawns, millions of salmon eggs drift down the Kenai gravel bars. Matching bead color, size, and translucency to the specific stage of spawn is the key to 30-inch trout.

6mm - 8mm Fresh King / Sockeye Egg

Colors: Oregon Cheese, Chartreuse Flame, Apricot Supreme

Use in early spawn (mid-August) when eggs are freshly dropped.

8mm - 10mm Dead / Opaque Egg

Colors: Mottled Peach, Dead Egg White, Pearl Orange

Use in late September as eggs decay and turn opaque.

10mm - 12mm Flesh / Bead Combo

Colors: Flesh Pink, Creamy White + 10mm Mottled Orange

Fished in October under a heavy indicator behind decaying salmon carcasses.

Sockeye Salmon: Flossing & Fly Patterns

June 11 – August 15

Sockeye salmon do not strike out of hunger in freshwater; they are hooked in the mouth through precise bottom flossing techniques using weighted lined flies.

Coho Fly / Russian River Fly

Hook: #2 to #4 Gamakatsu Octopus Hook, unweighted or light lead tape

Chartreuse, Flashaboo Pink, or Flame Orange bucktail.

Kenai Sockeye Special

Hook: #2 Short Shank Live Bait Hook with 1/8 oz split shot

Fished on a 6-foot 25lb fluorocarbon leader hugging the gravel bottom.

Category 03

Coho / Silver Salmon: Streamers & Topwater

August 1 – October 15

Kenai Silvers are aggressive predators that aggressively attack large articulate streamers and surface poppers in quiet backwaters.

Pink & Purple Dolly Whacker

Hook: #1/0 Articulated Streamer

Swum through slow eddy lines and deep gravel drop-offs.

Flesh Fly / Sculptor

Hook: #2 Bunny Strip Streamer in Ginger/White

Highly effective in September when silvers hold near spawning salmon beds.

Surface Popper / Wog

Hook: #1 Foam Pink Salmon Wog

Fished on topwater in shallow side sloughs during low light morning hours.

Recommended Kenai Trout Nymphing & Indicator Rigging

1. Strike Indicator & Weight Placement

Position a Thingamabobber or Airflo indicator 1.5 times the water depth above your split shot. Attach 2 to 3 AAA split shot onto a indicator knot to keep the bead in the bottom 6 inches of the gravel column where rainbow trout hold.

2. Fluorocarbon Tippet Section

Use 10lb (2X) or 12lb (1X) high-abrasion fluorocarbon tippet. The glacial milk clarity of the Lower Kenai requires stealth, but giant 24 to 30-inch trout will break lighter tippet in heavy current.

3. Hook & Bead Pegging

Thread the bead onto the tippet, then tie a #4 or #6 Gamakatsu C14S or Owner hook using a Non-Slip Mono Loop or Clinch Knot. Insert a soft silicone bead peg 1.5 inches above the hook eye and trim flush.

Pro Tip: Always test your bead peg tension after catching a fish to ensure the bead hasn't slid down against the hook eye.
