Your Full-Day Kenai Drift Schedule
Morning Launch & Safety Briefing
Meet Captain Ian at the designated boat launch. Gear up in waders, fit PFDs, and review the day's river conditions and casting strategy.
Morning Drift & Prime Water
Float through prime holding water during the coolest morning hours. Sight-fish for wild rainbows or step onto gravel bars to intercept surging sockeye pods.
Riverside Shore Lunch
Pull the drift boat ashore on an uncrowded gravel bar for hearty riverside lunch, fresh hot coffee, and gear adjustments.
Afternoon Run & Technical Drifts
Work technical braided channels and tailouts. Match the afternoon hatch or dead-drift custom egg beads through active spawning redds.
Takeout & Catch Care
Arrive at the takeout launch. Ian expertly bleeds, guts, and fillets any retained harvest salmon and provides ice pack care.
Why We Row Drift Boats on the Kenai
The Upper Kenai River flows through the federally protected Kenai National Wildlife Refuge, where motors are prohibited. Here, towering cottonwoods hang over the river and brown bears fish on the riverbanks alongside nesting bald eagles.
Rowing a drift boat allows us to present flies with natural drift speed that powerboats cannot replicate. No motor vibrations spook trophy trout holding in 2 feet of water. You hear the water lap against the aluminum hull and the drag sing when a heavy fish bolts.
Ian has rowed these rapids and canyons for over two decades. His boat handling keeps you safely in position so you can concentrate on your cast and hook set.
