When it comes to Water Conditions, here is what you need to know. Spring has officially arrived on the Kenai Peninsula. The days are getting longer, the ice is clearing out, and the river is beginning its annual awakening. If you're heading down early this month, here is what you need to know.
Water Levels and Clarity (Water Conditions)
Mastering Water Conditions
Currently, the water is very low and extremely clear—typical for early May before the major glacial melt begins. This extreme clarity means trout are incredibly spooky. You'll need to drop your fluorocarbon tippet sizes down and lengthen your leaders.
Boat Launch Updates
Most of the middle and lower river boat launches are now free of shore ice, including Eagle Rock and Bing's Landing. However, use extreme caution; the low water exposes gravel bars and boulders that are normally submerged.
