Conservation First: How Catch and Release Saves the Kenai

Kenai Fishing Team May 31, 2026

When it comes to Conservation, here is what you need to know. As professional guides making our living on this river, protecting the resource is our absolute highest priority. Without the fish, we have nothing.

The Rainbow Trout Resource (Conservation)

Mastering Conservation

The massive Rainbow Trout in the Kenai River are wild, native fish. They take years to reach the 30-inch trophy size. To ensure our grandchildren can experience the thrill of catching one of these monsters, all of our trout trips are strictly catch-and-release.

Proper Handling

We use knotless, rubber nets to protect their slime coats. We keep the fish submerged while removing the hook (we only use single, barbless hooks). If a photo is taken, the fish is supported horizontally and lifted out of the water for less than 10 seconds. Respect the fish, and the river will continue to provide.
